B. Steps for Spacecraft Shutdown
The final commanding for spacecraft was discussed in Honda1 and will be reviewed in detail herein. A
spacecraft is ready for the shutdown phase when ranging has verified it has reached the appropriate de-orbit altitude
and all venting operations are completed. The general requirements for shutdown and passivation of a spacecraft are:
1) Ensure payload is off
2) Ensure all pressurized systems are vented
3) Passivate all stored energy sources on board
4) Disable and turn off fault protection
5) Disable and turn off most heaters
6) Disable and turn off battery charging systems
7) Disable and turn off batteries
'8) Disable and turn off momentum storage devices and gyro
9) Disable and turn off spacecraft control processor
10) Disable and turn off payload telemetry and command units
11) Disable and turn off telemetry transmitters
In general, as each step is performed, the spacecraft goes to a lower energy state but also to a potentially riskier
state as well. For example, the depletion of propellants and venting of pressurant removes a great deal of potential
energy from the spacecraft. But the spacecraft also has much less torque authority in this configuration and is much
more susceptible to an external attitude disturbance.
