Classic Rock Newswire is reporting QUEEN will tour in 2005, with Roger Taylor and Brian May deciding on PAUL RODGERS (FREE/BAD COMPANY) as the man to fill in for the late, great Freddie Mercury.

Apparently some European venues have already been booked, Le Zenith in Paris for March 2005, <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> gr.

NELSON MANDELA ANNOUNCES 46664 SOUTH AFRICA CONCERT SPEARHEADED BY ROCK LEGENDS QUEEN

 

(JO’BURG – 20th December 2004) Former President Nelson Mandela announced today plans for a second 46664 concert to be staged in South Africa early next year.

 

Fifteen months after their participation in the historic 46664 founding concert in Cape Town last November, Queen, joined for the first time by singer, songwriter multi-instrumentalist Paul Rodgers (Free / Bad Company), will return to further help the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s 46664 campaign in the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS with a concert at Fancourt on March 19.

 

In announcing 46664 South Africa, as the concert has been titled, Former President Nelson Mandela also confirmed that a number of further international artists will join Queen + Paul Rodgers, together with several South African artists. The full line-up, which will include prominent international female artists will be revealed early in the New Year.

 

The event, taking place at the Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate, is being made possible by the generous support of philanthropist Prof. Dr. Hasso Plattner, co-founder and chairman of SAP, who has given the venue for free to stage the concert. Dr. Plattner will also further underwrite the entire costs of the event so that all profits from tickets, hospitality etc can be donated directly to the Nelson Mandela Foundation in the names of the performing artists.

 

The focus of this year’s concert, in line with the theme of World AIDS Day this year, will be to promote recognition that women are now bearing the brunt of the HIV/Aids pandemic with the fastest increase in infections now showing among women and girls. They account for 57 per cent of all those infected in sub-Saharan Africa, and for 75 per cent of those aged 15 to 24. In every region of the world, rates of infection in women are rising faster than in men. Women have to be socially and economically empowered to bring about the necessary changes in traditions and culture to raise awareness and help combat AIDS

 

Making the announcement, Former President Nelson Mandela said, “46664 South Africa will build on the success of our truly memorable concert in Cape Town last year. It will serve to support the efforts of the Nelson Mandela Foundation and to show the world that South Africa is really addressing this most vital issue. And most importantly, it will help us raise more funds to lead the fight to help those infected and affected by this pandemic.” Mr Mandela added: “We are incredibly indebted to Dr Plattner for his most generous support that will enable us not only to stage this second 46664 concert, but also to put money straight into the field projects of my Foundation to support our fight to stop HIV/AIDS in Southern Africa and to help in particular the growing numbers of women infected and affected.”

 

Prof. Dr. Hasso Plattner added: “The HIV/AIDS tragedy is one that urgently needs to be addressed at all levels of our society. It poses a challenge for everyone who is not only committed to the people of Africa, but to all the people of the world. 46664 South Africa will be a message of hope to the world that it is possible to make a real difference in the fight against HIV/AIDS.” Dr Plattner added, “The 46664 campaign is about more than just South Africa, it is about the danger we all face from HIV/AIDS. Together, we will demonstrate to the world that South Africa is ready and willing to accept its responsibility as an emerging and proud nation to lead the fight to stop HIV/AIDS.”

 

Inspired by the vision and leadership of Mr Mandela, 46664 was set up by Dave Stewart, Bono, and Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen last year with the aim of raising awareness of the global HIV/AIDS pandemic, as well as funds, to help the Nelson Mandela Foundation to initiate, develop and support practical programmes for the prevention, testing, care and support for those infected and affected by HIV / AIDS in Southern Africa.

 

A message from Queen’s Brian May regarding their return to South Africa said:

 

“This is a great occasion for Queen to fulfill our continuing commitment to Nelson Mandela's AIDS cause. It is particularly exciting because this will be the first opportunity for Roger and myself to play a full set on stage with Paul Rodgers. We will be routining together especially for this concert in the weeks leading up to this date. It will be an international 'first'”.

 

The 46664 South Africa Concert will be produced by Jim Beach (co-producer with JF Cecillon of the launch concert in Cape Town last year), together with much of the same technical team behind the original concert, and will be filmed by SABC for transmission across the entire African sub-continent.

Een aantal jaren geleden heb ik Brian May gezien en vond het toen super, hoewel ze het ook toen van de oude nummers moesten hebben, maar wie niet. Een concert van wat voor band ook met alleen nieuwe nummers die je niet goed kent is ook minder dan wanneer het bekende werk gespeeld word. En ja, waar is John Deacon???? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/kweetniet.gif" alt="" /> . Dat vroeg ik mij de laatste keer af bij Ronnie James Dio, waar is Mr. Bain. Het zou mij niet verbazen als ze samen in de kroeg zijn blijven steken <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> of samen en bas partijtje spelen <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> , gr.

Heeft wel ff geduurd en het zal Freddie niet overtreffen maar toch, zoals Zilverster al aangeeft, ook ik ben naar het concert van Brian May geweest en eigenlijk was het geweldig omdat ze zoveel Queen speelde!

Ja, ik heb veel concerten gezien in mijn leven, dat is de andere hobby. Sommige dingen vergeet je nooit meer omdat ze er uit springen. Het beste concert wat ik heb meegemaakt is en blijft altijd nog die van Frank Marino (bedoel ik niet die iets met porno te maken heeft) toen der tijd in Paradiso in Amsterdam en dat zeggen ook de meeste mensen uit mijn naaste omgeving die daar bij waren <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif" alt="" /> , gr.

Ik heb er ook naar redelijk veel geweest (ca 4x per jaar) doch niets overtreft de drie Queen concerten (82, 84 en 86) in de Groenoordhallen.

Vooral het concert van 86 was geweldig, de lichtshow werd steeds beter en zo.

Veel concerten vindt ik tegenwoordig voor wat betreft de show terug lopen, vooral op het gebied van de laser mis ik er toch wel wat. Het valt natuurlijk ook niet mee voor de bands om steeds weer iets nieuws en/of iets beters te bedenken. Kijk maar eens als ze een zeeeer goede CD hebben uitgebracht, je hoopt dan vaak dat de volgen die uitkomt net zo goed is en dat is helaas vaak niet het geval, gr.
