F R E E S A T from the BBC and ITV - Digital Satellite Platform

Expected launch: Autumn 2007

The BBC and ITV have confirmed plans to launch a rival to BSkyB's F R E E S A T from Sky' offering. The new service - also to be called F R E E S A T - will target the estimated 25% of homes unable to receive Freeview Digital F R E E S A T terrestrial.

F R E E S A T, will be the first satellite rival to Sky since the demise of British Satellite Broadcasting in the 1990s.

"As we move from an analogue to a digital environment, F R E E S A T - and Freeview - will enable every family in the UK to enjoy a wide range of quality channels for free," said ITV chief executive Charles Allen.

A spokesperson for the BBC added: "We believe that the development of a free satellite service as a simple, open standard will encourage innovation, quality and range among providers of satellite services, extend choice for audiences, and bring the UK an important step closer to being a fully digital nation."

 

 

F R E E S A T will allow the BBC and ITV to supply their services directly to consumers without the broadcasters having to pay Sky to encrypt their programmes. The service was expected to launch early in 2006. The present launch date will probbly be in the Autumn of 2007.

A Public Service Platform

F R E E S A T will enable people to access all BBC and ITV digital TV channels plus interactive and radio services via a satellite dish. Approximately a quarter of TV viewers live outside the Freeview coverage area.

One other major advantage of F R E E S A T will be the amount of available space for new broadcasters and new channels. There is currently very little capacity available on the digital terrestrial network, this will not increase before analouge services are switched off.

F R E E S A T will help provide a free Public Service platform for both radio and TV broadcasters in the United Kingdom, providing a far cheaper and more Public Service option to the Sky Digital platform

What channels will be available on F R E E S A T?

 

It is unlikely that either Channel Four or Five will join F R E E S A T from its launch in 2007, due to contractual obligation with Sky Digital. Channel Four’s contract is up for renewal in 2008, it seems highly unlikely, that the broadcaster will renew an expensive encryption deal with Sky.

Four’s other channels, E4 and More4 are already FTA on digital terrestrial. Film4 already broadcasts FTA via satellite and on Freeview. Five's new channels, Five Life and Five US, due to launch during October 2006, are both to be FTA on satellite and Freeview. It seems logical for F R E E S A T to reserve epg numbers 4 and 5 for the two terrestrial channels.

 

Channels such as CNN, Euronews and Sky News along with foreign language broadcasters such as TV5 Europe, TVE Int, would all be prime candidates for the new service, along with a host of community and shopping channels.

What equipment will you require to watch F R E E S A T?

Viewers will require a F R E E S A T box in order to obtain the services. No details are currently available, though F R E E S A T will have its own EPG (Electronic Programme Guide).

Encryption?

Encryption could well be an option for the F R E E S A T platform, there are a number of options available:

Firstly the service could, as is expected be totally Free To Air (FTA), this could leave some broadcasters with copyright issues, if their services are receivable outside the United Kingdom. It should be remembered, that the BBC, ITV and Film4 already broadcast FTA from the Astra 2D satellite without any major copyright issues.

Some form of embeded 'Soft Encryption', could well be an option, this would prevent the signals from being received by non F R E E S A T viewers and solve the problem of issuing Smart Cards.

F R E E S A Tcould use embedded encryption with a Smart card, allowing regional BBC and ITV versions to be displayed by Post Code.

Another option, could be to include a Conditional Access Slot (CAS) in the F R E E S A T receivers, allowing those broadcasters who wish to, to encrypt and supply viewers with an appropriate card and Conditional access Module (CAM).

This option could allow a subscription based service to coexist along side the F R E E S A T service in the same way Freeview and Top Up TV share the Digital Terrestrial platform. This could in time, be a competetor to Sky's dominance of the Pay TV market in the U.K.

Het is natuurlijk wel een plan van SES Astra die ook actief is voor codering in Duitsland.

Het is natuurlijk de vraag in hoeverre de BBC hier in mee gaat. Die baalt al genoeg van het gedrag van Sky in de afgelopen jaren als monopolist.

Ik begrijp uit het bericht juist dat ze een "rival" voor Sky neer willen zetten?

 

Dus voor hetzelfde geld is het -bij wijze van spreken- een compleet nieuw aanbod op 27,5 west om maar wat geks te noemen.

 

Ik lees niet dat dit in de plaats van Sky's aanbod komt.

Ach, vooralsnog lijkt me dit gespeculeer op basis van berichten op een vrij vage website.

Eerst hebben BBC en ITV zich ontworsteld aan SKY, zodat veel Britten investeerden in -non sky- receivers en dan zouden die nu opeens vervangen moeten worden voor een alternatief encryptiesysteem?

Ik ga ervan uit dat BBC en ITV ongecodeerd blijven. Die codering is evt. een optie voor kanalen die er nog bij komen en nu ook gecodeerd zijn (maar dan alleen via Sky). Zo moeten we bijvoorbeeld denken aan Channel4, E4, More4, Five, FiveLife en FiveUS. Althans, ik heb dit zo van Engelse vrienden gehoord.

Als je het artikel goed leest, staat er nergens vermeld dat BBC en ITV opnieuw gaan coderen.

 

Er wordt over codering gesproken, maar dan eerder als een mogelijkheid voor zenders die dit om welke reden ook zouden willen doen, zoals copyright-issues bv voor Five of omdat het om een betaalaanbod zou gaan.

 

Bovendien is het allemaal niet zeer accuraat, nu wordt vermeld dat Five Life en Five Us FTA zouden zijn, waar deze duidelijk FTV zijn.

 

Ik zie BBC en ITV nog niet zo snel gaan coderen. Ze hebben hemel en aarde bewogen om van de codering van Sky af te raken en omdat ze uitzenden via 2D is de footprint beperkt.

 

De overspill naar Europa moet bovendien niet overdreven worden.

 

Ik kan mij niet voorstellen dat er in Frankrijk in massa naar Astra 2 zou gekeken worden en in de Benelux zitten BBC1 en BBC2 bijna overal op de kabel en worden de rechten betaald. Bovendien gaat het toch ook hier niet om zenders die massaal worden bekeken door Belgen en Nederlanders. Heeft er iemand al ooit geweten van een BBC of ITV programma dat het de top-50 van de kijkcijfers zou gehaald hebben.

 

Weet überhaupt de modale Belg of Nederlander wel dat die kanalen via sat te ontvangen zijn ... en zelfs als ze het al weten verkiezen ze toch hun nationale zenders.

Nu ben ik zelf wel iemand die zeer regelmatig naar BBC/ITV kijkt. Maar als mensen al sat kijken, dan moet je voor die kanalen apart een LNB voor de Astra 2 nemen incl. een DiSeCq switch enz. Het overgrote deel van de sat-kijkers neemt die moeite absoluut niet.

Ik ook en het aanbod op BBC (en ook ITV) is zeer goed.

 

Maar inderdaad het overgrote deel van de mensen heeft er geen boodschap aan om ernaar te kijken, laat staan allerlei technische hoogstanden te gaan uithalen om ze te ontvangen via satelliet.

Toen ik vorig jaar begon met satellietontvangst was het eerste wat mijn vrouw vroeg waar de BBC-zenders zaten. Ik had toen alleen nog de Astra 1 en op haar aandringen was het snel mogelijk om ook de Astra 2 te ontvangen. En ik viel met mijn neus in de boter want dat was net rond het moment dat de ITV-zenders ook FTA werden.

 

Het is dat de Engelsen op een andere satelliet zitten, anders had er wel degelijk meer naar worden gekeken in NL/BE.

BBC en ITV zijn inderdaad TOP. Neem nu sterren dansen / schaatsen, dat komt daar vandaan. En niet net zo als in nederland een twee avonden lang gerekt zeur programma met veel reclame en al het telefoongeld voor de comerciele omroep. Gewoon een leuk programma op de vooravond, zonder reklame en het telefoongeld is voor het goede doel.

Sja, dat komt omdat dat op de BBC wordt uitgezonden. Die krijgen al burgergeld genoeg binnen <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />. Als het op onze publieke omroepen zou worden uitgezonden, zou het ook zo kunnen. Als ik naar programma's die op ITV worden uitgezonden kijk (Idols en X Factor), dan worden die OOK flink uitgemolken. De uitzending + results worden naast de live uitzending zo ongeveer nog 3x herhaald en iedere donderdag is er nu zelfs the Xtra Factor.

 

Dus zoveel verschil is er met Nederland nu ook weer niet.

Nou dat zijn nou juist de programma's in Nederland waarom ik switch naar BBC, misschien dat het in het format van de BBC minder irritant is.

Zoals ik het verhaal lees lijkt het mij ook voorbarig om te denken dat BBC stopt met FTA uitzendingen.

Inderdaad. Er word over gesproken dat zenders de mogelijkheid hebben tot het (soft) coderen indien ze problemen met de uitzendrechten krijgen. Vooralsnog heeft de BBC daarmee totaal geen moeilijkheden gehad.

 

Ik lees dus dat er wellicht meer ongecodeerde zenders bijkomen om de mensen in de buitengebieden te bedienen.
