The Ubuntu team is proud to announce the beta release of Ubuntu 7.04.

 

Ubuntu 7.04 is the most user-friendly Ubuntu to date and includes a ground-breaking Windows migration assistant, excellent wireless networking support and improved multimedia support.

 

Ubuntu 7.04 server edition adds support for hardware facilities that speed up the use of virtual machines as well as other improved hardware support, making it an excellent choice as a web, database, file and print server, the fastest growing area of Linux server use.

Desktop highlights

 

Windows migration tool: The new migration tool recognises Internet Explorer bookmarks, Firefox favourites, desktop wallpaper, AOL IM contacts, and Yahoo IM contacts, and imports them into Ubuntu during installation. This offers easier and faster migration for new users of Ubuntu and individuals wanting to run a dual-boot system.

 

Easy-to-install codec wizards: A new guided wizard for installing codecs not shipped with Ubuntu gives users a safe way of installing codecs they can legally use to view multimedia content.

 

Plug and play network sharing with Avahi: This new feature allows users to automatically discover and join a wireless network and share music, find printers and more.

Server highlights

 

Virtualisation support: On x86 systems with the Intel VT or AMD-V extensions, Kernel-based Virtual Machine support (KVM) allows users to run multiple virtual machines running unmodified Linux. Each virtual machine has private virtualised hardware: a network card, disk, graphics adapter, and so on. We have also added VMI support, which provides optimised performance under VMWare.

Edubuntu highlights

 

Thin client: Edubuntu integrates the latest thin client technology out of the box. Edubuntu Classroom Server consists of two CDs, a server image and a server add-on image with additional education applications and languages.

 

Improved documentation: The Edubuntu handbook with tips and best practices for educators and educational IT administrators is included.

Thin Client highlights

 

Print and sound support: Jetpipe, a new printing architecture for thin clients, greatly improves on previous technologies. Sound support in applications is also dramatically improved with the PulseAudio sound server.

Known Bugs

 

* Resizing ext2/ext3 file systems may fail unless a full file system check has just been run. To work around this, run 'e2fsck -f DEVICE' (where DEVICE is the name of the device in question, such as /dev/sda1) and retry the resize operation after that completes. When using the desktop CD, you can run this from a terminal window; when using the alternate install CD, you can press Alt-F2 to get to a terminal, and Alt-F1 to return to the installer. https://launchpad.net/bugs/94647

* Systems with JMicron IDE(PATA) chipsets may experience a crash on boot. This was not fixed in time for beta release, but a planned kernel upload just after release will rectify the problem. Een aantal dagen geleden hebben de mensen van Ubuntu de eerste bètaversie van Ubuntu Linux 7.04 beschikbaar gesteld. Deze versie volgt de eerder uitgebrachte alpha's op en kan vanaf deze pagina in diverse uitvoeringen gedownload worden. In versie 7.04 bèta wordt onder andere de 'Windows migration tool' en Avahi getest. Met behulp van het laatstgenoemde programma is het mogelijk om naar draadloze netwerken te zoeken en een verbinding te maken naar een van die netwerken. De Server-editie van Ubuntu Linux is voorzien van ondersteuning voor kernel-based virtual machine, evenals voor VMWares Virtual Machine Interface. Als alles volgens planning loopt dan zal de finalversie van Ubuntu Linux 7.04 in april klaar zijn. De release notes van de nieuwe bèta zien er als volgt uit:

volgens mij zou vandaag de final uitkomen dus ik zou dan niet deze beta installeren.

je kan Ubuntu er zo naast installeren, even het OS op CD branden (bootable) en opstarten maar. hij installeerd zelf wel een bootloader (grub) en dan kan je kiezen.

makkelijkste is op een eigen schijf en anders ruimte maken op je huidige schijf. tijdens de setup kan er wel gepartitioneerd worden echter gaat mijn voorkeur uit naar een aparte schijf.

wifi zou geen probleem moeten zijn voor zover ik weet ...

Dat is de versie speciaal voor computers based op AMD64 of EM64T architectuur (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon).

Heb net ff ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso gedownload en weggezet op cd.Deze start als default op als live cd.Dus werken vanaf de cd.Op je desktop staat er een install ikoon...via deze zet je ubuntu weg op je harde schijf.Hier ook ff getest en zette deze netjes naast een ander bestaand OS, zonder deze te verprutsen.Bij de volgende start kon ik via grub kiezen welk OS ik wou starten.Dus hier geen problemen mee.maar 't is altijd verstandig als je deze naast je WinXP zet, om toch eerst je belangrijke files te back-uppen (uit veiligheid...je weet maar nooi).Als je deze op een tweede HD zet , ja dat is eigenlijk 't beste...werk je volkomen safe.moet je je juist niet vergissen bij het toewijzen van de juiste HD.Thats all.

Moet er een hele harde schijf geformatteerd worden om Unbunto via de HD te laten draaien of blijven de files bestaan? ( ik heb 6 HD's op mijn systeem non raid)

@1: dat is mogelijk, maar vereist wel enige kennis en 'gekloot'. de configuratie file waar dat in staat (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) wordt nu vanaf de cd geladen en die zal je daarvoor arbitrair moeten aanpassen. als je linux/ubuntu kennis beperkt is verdient het de voorkeur om ubuntu eerst even op hd te installeren. alles zal daar sowieso ook een heel stuk sneller van worden. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

@2: nee dat hoeft niet, als je maar ergens vrije ruimte hebt die je ubuntu kan laten gebruiken. een bestaande partitie die 'weg' mag is ook prima, die zal ubuntu dan zelf opnieuw formatteren naar ext3 (het bestandssysteem). het verdient overigens de voorkeur om in ieder geval 2 partities te gebruiken voor linux, zodat de opstartbestanden en je 'persoonlijke' bestanden elk op een eigen plaats staan; op die manier kan je makkelijk later een andere versie (her-)installeren zonder dat je eerst al je eigen bestanden moet backuppen (en later weer terugzetten). voor de systeempartie (/) is doorgaans 10GB genoeg om te reserveren. als je nu 1 partitie hebt die je beschikbaar wil stellen kan linux die naar wens ook zelf splitsen in een / en /home gedeelte.

[edit] en inderdaad, dat was ik nog vergeten: zoals jacobus zegt, een Swap partitie van circa 1GB. die zal ubuntu doorgaans ook zelf voor je aanmaken. als je voor handmatige configuratie kiest zal je hem zelf moeten aanmaken, maar zal ubuntu wel even een melding geven als je het vergeten bent.

Ik heb 7.04 erop gezet, en ik moet zeggen: weer een stap vooruit.

3d ondersteuning en desktop effecten inschakelen (nvidia kaart) is slechts een kwestie van aanvinken, en werkt prima.

Multimedia ondersteuning sterk verbeterd door automatisch downloaden van de benodigde codecs.

Je kunt dus zonder veel kennis vrijwel alles afspelen in deze linux versie.

Tijdens de installatie kun je de Harde schijf automatisch of handmatig instellen. Ik heb handmatig gedaan, en daarbij win XP ongemoeid gelaten. (ik had al dual boot draaien met ubuntu 6.10.

Ik heb 6.10 vervangen door 7.04, en daarbij een gedeelte van de schijf geformatteerd. Werkt vrij eenvoudig.

Zorg wel voor een swap file op de HD.
