A new channel for Paris in the spring with Quantel

NRJ Paris chooses Enterprise sQ to spearhead NRJ-TV`s multi-platform development

DMN Newswire--2008-3-3--With NRJ Paris (the NRJ TV division?s fourth channel), scheduled to go on air in March, the group is innovating once again, introducing a cultural and events-based 24/7 channel in Greater Paris, broadcasting in 16:9 on DTTV. The production and post-production infrastructure is entirely based on Quantel technology. The Quantel solutions being implemented will also allow sister channel NRJ-12 to migrate quickly to full HD in the coming months.

?We carefully checked out every vendor in the market,? says Christophe Cornillet, Chief Engineer of the NRJ-TV Division, ?and we chose Quantel equipment without the least hesitation. To begin with, our many tests demonstrated its speed, reliability, efficiency and, above all its future-proofed potential for further development.

?Second, the shared interface between the different workstations was ideal for us to build a flexible workflow and to train our journalists and editors painlessly, enabling them to be autonomous from the start,? Cornillet continues.

?What really did it for us was the scalability of the production and post-production infrastructure, giving us the flexibility to gear up our operations as we develop, without having to rethink our overall design and systems architecture. Finally, only the Quantel solution allowed us to easily interface our new kit with our existing UNET archiving system, thus doing away with the need to add on an extra layer or to have to rethink our Media Asset Management system.

?At NRJ-TV, we do not consider television to be a legacy medium,? Cornillet continues. ?We?re not trying to replicate the TV of the Nineties; we?re trying to create a versatile and exciting medium for today?s multi-platform landscape. The fact that we can gradually gear up our offering, especially in HD, without having to redesign everything from scratch, is really an essential consideration for us.?

The new setup, spread over three floors in a building in the West End of Paris, is built around an sQ server with 400 hours of storage, eight sQ Edit Plus workstations, four sQ Cut desktop editing applications and the brand-new Quantel Mission Media Asset Management system. The system will be used both by journalists and craft editors. For on-air graphics, the channel chose the latest generation of Quantel sQ Edit Plus graphics software, with its advanced Templating features.

NRJ Paris will therefore serve as NRJ?s technical launch pad and work model, spearheading the way for the development of its existing channels as they all diversify to new distribution networks. NRJ Paris is being positioned as an ?infotainment? channel, focusing on leisure, excursions and shows in Greater Paris.

?Once we?ve got NRJ Paris operating at full speed in our new production centre, we?re going to bring all our other channels, which are currently outsourced, back into the fold. This will enable us to be responsive and to focus on the quality of our HD production and our multiplatform output. With Quantel, we know that there are no technical limitations and that our development simply depends on our ability to innovate and to design and create the next generation of television programming? ? concludes Cornillet.

NRJ was one of the pioneers of free radio in France and has been breaking new ground for the last three years in multi-platform broadcasting. NRJ first diversified with the launch of Digital Terrestrial Television (DTTV) in France, starting up NRJ-12, a generalist channel that has been very successful among younger viewers and which is now also available in HD on cable and the ADSL networks of France?s leading Internet providers: Orange, Neuf Télécom and Free. Last year, the group launched NRJ Hits, a music channel on satellite, cable and ADSL, and a few months ago they initiated a local TNT channel in Montpellier.

Het Franse artikel bij telesatellite heeft het over "en clair", dus normalerwijze FTA.
