What I see is the Vertex, Single pole transmit dishes. The same type as I spoke about. These are transmit dishes, the ideal orange segment shape has been modified to achieve better beam shaping in the transmit mode (mandatory requirement). These dishes only have gain in one pole so if they send and receive, in co, or the same pole. This is a technically difficult trick but can be done. Not too many satellites operate this way. In the case of the jumbo antenna it only receives so it is a pure orange segment shape. This is for max gain (on one pole zero gain on the other) and to minimize wind drag.

The vertex, it reduces wind loading, smaller mounts and drastically reduces cost. Half the operational flexibility half the cost. No magic. We are talking about the same thing.

 

The Norsemen used to find their way across oceans with a "Magic" crystal. Used to see the Sun when there wasn't any. Analysis reveals that the crystal used performed two tricks. One it made infra red light visible. Then it split that light into two beams on the rear of the crystal. Then by rocking the crystal the beams could be made to be exactly the same brightness. In that position the crystal was pointing exactly at the sun A simple gravity scale gave the angle. Then it had a pointer and had two discs with two scales on. One translated the suns angle to the time of day. The other converted the first two into a compass direction. -NO Magic. Only a direction in which to go.

Hope that explanation removes the confusion. Neither are magic just good old engineering solutions to a problem.

Another little engineering tip. Is your Laser dead in your player. Open the box switch it on point your cellphone camera at the laser in operation. If its good you will see a strong orange light. No Magic- just the phone has a wider spectral sensitivity than your eyes. Everything is done for a reason.
