Netherlands next goal for MGM

 

Stateside movie studio MGM, which has already signed a joint-venture deal with Premiere putting a branded film channel into Germany, has broken into the Netherlands with a new cable deal.

 

MGM has secured non-exclusive carriage with UPC Nederland, Holland's largest cable operator, to launch the MGM Channel for the first time in Holland.

 

The MGM movie channel will offer round-the-clock movies from MGM's celebrated 4,000-title library, including Annie Hall, Bull Durham, The Fortune Cookie, Last Tango in Paris and The Pink Panther.

 

The channel is to launch in the first quarter of 2003 and will also be made available to other Dutch cable operators.

 

MGM's channel airs in Latin America, Europe, India, Israel, Turkey and New Zealand, as well as the Middle East and South Korea. Its customised channel in Germany is anticipated to debut on the Premiere pay-TV platform during the second quarter of 2003.

 

Bruce Tuchman, evp of MGM Networks, said: "The Netherlands is one of the largest cable markets in Europe and UPC is the country's leading cable operator. This will open up a new revenue stream for us in one of the most highly penetrated cable markets in the world."
