Last night(5 juni), Microsoft released the first beta release of the highly-anticipated Service Pack 1 for Windows XP! This first beta build 1050 includes a whole bunch of spicy features that may catch your attention:

In compliance with the settlement that Microsoft agreed upon with the Justice Department and nine states, the Service Pack 1 introduces a new Control Panel component named Set Programs Access and Defaults. This tool allows users to hide Microsoft middleware products like Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, etc. in favor of similar third-party products.

As result of Microsoft's "Trustworthy Computing" initiative, this service release addresses lots of security flaws that have been discovered during a nearly two-month security analysis of the Windows source code. Of course, it also includes all the patches and bug-fixes that have been issued for Windows XP since its release last October.

Additionally, this beta release of the Windows XP SP1 includes Windows Messenger 4.7 (build 31), Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 (build 2800.1050), a slightly updated version of Windows Media Player 8.0 (build 4483), full support for USB 2.0, and IPv6.

Despite these goodies, some people may find the Service Pack 1 to include a rather unpleasant surprise: Microsoft has blacklisted one of the famous Volume License Keys out there (FCKGW...) in order to prevent pirated copies of Windows XP from updating.

If you want to give this puppy a try, feel free to snag the considerably small express installer below... Though, please be aware that this version will only work on english language systems!
